Requirements for a student visa in Ireland

If you’re planning to apply for a student visa for Ireland, it’s important to understand the key requirements before your arrival.
Participants from outside the EEA can benefit from a 25-week academic year programme which allows them to stay in Ireland for 8 months with the right to work part-time for 6 months (while studying) and full-time for 2 months in summer months as well as in December and January. Students can extend their stay up to two times (24 months in total). Both long terms and short-term, EU and non-EU students, first-time visitors and those who extend their visas attend the classes and progress in English together.  Please note that depending on your country of origin you might be required to apply for visa, or not, before coming to Ireland. In case you need a visa, please allow ample time for your visa application to be considered.
All non-EU students applying for the academic year programme are required to:

  • have a private medical insurance to cover their entire stay in Ireland (our school can provide it)
  • make arrangements for accommodation ahead of their arrival in Ireland (we can help with this, too)
  • pay the course fees in full (we provide a secure escrow facility at  https://flywire.com/pay/yourenglishie-escroweuro)
  • have sufficient funds available to stay in Ireland
  • register through the school for an end-of-course exam shortly after arriving in Ireland
  • register with GNIB shortly after arriving in Ireland

Attendance rules for student visa holders:

As per the Department of Justice regulations, academic year non-EEA students in Ireland are required to have attendance of minimum 85%.  The students’ attendance is recorded twice a day: for the first class (9:15 -10:45) and the second class (10:45-12:30). If your attendance falls below the 85% limit you will be notified by letter of your current attendance % and the need to attend class. Persistent and unjustified absence may result in you being expelled and may impact negatively on your visa status .

Refund policy for student visa applicants:

Students who fail to secure a visa and can provide relevant documentation are entitled to a full refund less an administration fee of 100 EUR.  To receive the refund  the visa refusal must be notified to the school in writing and a copy of the refusal letter signed by Irish Immigration Authorities must be provided. Please note that  accommodation fees, medical insurance and end-of-course exam fees are passed on to third parties and might be non-refundable. For other course cancellation scenarios please refer to the school’s Refund Policy
